The Course

Grand Trunk

The first of four plateau holes, courtesy of the original limestone quarry upon which Beaconsfield was built. The Grand Trunk requires a drive into the distance to avoid the well placed and challenging bunker on the right. Trees line the length of left side and an ever present, out of bounds awaits an errant shot that finds the range to the far right. The green is well protected by deep bunkers left and right and an approach that overshoots the green will struggle for an up and down from the back.

The Gap

Having taken the tunnel underneath the autoroute above, the Gap suitably describes the wall that divides the hole into two sections. A well-placed drive, or, for the longer hitter a long iron, will leave anything from a wedge to a mid-iron second. This hole’s defense is all about the severely sloping green from back to front, so pay particular attention to the pin position trying to stay below the hole.

The Corner

The Corner is a long par four that will require a straight drive and a long approach into a relatively cozy green. The bunkers throughout will hurt your scorecard if you go in any of them and the left side is protected along its length by trees and an encompassing ditch.

Oasis

An Oasis normally evokes a dream location, but the par 3 holes of Beaconsfield are far from it! A perfect illustration is this hole, the 4th. A long tee shot is required to a small, fast green with large bunkers both left and right. Anything other than an accurate tee shot will likely find a sandy grave. A mound behind prevents you from going too far over the green, but the downhill approach shot that follows puts even the best players to the test.

Faraway

The name “Faraway” perfectly reflects this hole as it is the longest on the course, stretching over 600 yards from the back tee. For most players, it will take three well-struck shots to get close to the green. The left side of the fairway is lined with small trees and a ditch, while the right side is an Audubon protected area, resulting in an automatic penalty if the ball goes out. Your second shot must be straight to avoid out of bounds on the left and a large pond on the right.

Hoodoo

The reputation of Beaconsfield's front nine is that it is more difficult than the back, and the 6th hole, "Hoodoo", is a good example of why! This is a long par 4 hole that requires great precision from the tee. Having negotiated the lake on the right, one must then avoid a magnetic clump of trees and more that extend to the elevated green. Greenside bunkers and a green that has slopes both left and right combine to create the most difficult hole on the front nine.

Lakeview

“Lakeview” offers the opportunity of a longer than usual tee shot as the downslope can add a welcome few extra yards. A drive that curves from right to left landing in the fairway, will put you in an ideal position. However , if you go too far to the left or right, you will most likely be chipping out sideways! Don't forget to look up and admire the view as you now head towards the clubhouse.

Highball

High Ball” is a par 3 distinguished by the severe slopes present on and around the green. Although this hole is not very long, it is still difficult protected by bunkers to the right and behind and a steep slope to the left of the green.

Pond

Returning through the tunnel, you come to a hole which is considered the easiest in terms of stroke index but be careful not to get trapped. The newly renovated bunkers on the right side of the fairway will make it tough to hit your second on to the green for anyone who ventures there. The presence of a pond plays tricks on more players than you can imagine, forcing you to carefully consider the distance needed for your tee shot and then make an accurate second shot to avoid an unintentional swim.

Westward Ho

Still in the area known as “The Valley” (holes 1,9,10&11) Westward Ho gives you another chance to drive from high up on the plateau. The renovated and visually stunning bunkers off the left side will make you think long and hard before crossing them, as you may be enticed to go for this par five in two.

Willow

A tight dogleg from left-to-right commands a well-placed drive between The Willows. There are no bunkers on this hole, but they’re not needed as its hard enough without. The limestone rock outlay of the old quarry can be seen as you start the approximate 40’ climb uphill to the large green.

Plateau

The Plateau, as the name suggests, is another hole where one’s drive reaches out to the distant yonder. This par five offers the chance of a birdie for those that keep their shots straight, avoiding trees and a pond to the right and trees and a large fairway bunker to the left.

Village

It’s not often that par threes are considered the amongst the hardest on the course, but as was the case on the 4th, this hole, the Village, is equally as demanding. Length being the main reason behind its difficulty but add the presence of a huge front greenside bunker, a severely sloping green and the challenging surrounding chipping areas; you will understand why most are very happy to leave with something near par.

Slam

Slam, is a straight away long par four that must avoid the trees that line the hole both to the left and right. The left side of the fairway is the ideal position for your drive as it will open up the approach to the green. A deep greenside bunker to the right and shallower bunker to the left, finish off the challenge.

Gibraltar

Beaconsfield’s signature hole, Gibraltar, refers to the limestone rock formation that surrounds the green. A wayward shot might incur a favourable rebound off its face, but the recommendation is a solid iron to the heart of the green avoiding the renovated bunkers that now enclose the hole.

Steeple

Following a stairway climb up to the tee you are rewarded with the final plateau-based tee shot back towards the lake. In the distance note The Steeple of the magnificent Saint-Joachim de Pointe-Claire Church and running along the fairway to the left is a former clubhouse (now used as an equipment barn) originally built in 1860. All elements combine to make this the hardest hole on the back nine, especially the centenary pond that fronts the green. Built in 2004 to celebrate the 100th year of the Club, safety will require a precise approach to clear the waters edge.

Sniper

Sniper will require a straight shot to an elevated green that is protected by bunkers on both the approach and right-hand side. However, to the left, a steep and tree-filled bank will bring bogey into play.

Home

One of the most picturesque final holes in the country emphasising the historic clubhouse in the background of this, the Home hole. A par five that plays very fairly to those who treat her well. A large pond to the right will catch any errant drive in that direction and anything to the left and over Golf Avenue will likely end up out of bounds. A small pond about 100 yards from the green might also catch those unaware of its existence. Equally important, the next hole, the 19th, overlooks this green providing great closing hole theatre.
